What does a Type 2 firefighter do?
Type 2 firefighters, also called sustained attack crews, are contracted with Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF). After fire rangers (Type 1) complete initial suppression, Type 2 crews stay on the line to:
- Recover equipment
- Extinguish hotspots
- Hold the fire until it’s declared under control
What firefighters get with Outland
What deployment looks like

- The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) or designated fire management agency issues a call-out for Type 2 crews.
- The MNRF tells us how many crews are required, what the location is and what the desired reporting time is. They will highlight any special circumstances that we may need to consider. They will ask us to confirm within 1 hour if we can supply the crews they have requested.

- Outland notifies Community Crew Coordinator of the call-out and we work to identify which crews are available for deployment. Crew bosses assemble the required number of firefighters.
- Personnel complete readiness checks: PPE (hard hat, boots, gloves, eye protection, ear protection, fire-resistant clothing), camping gear (If required), rain gear, qualification cards.

- Transportation for the fire fighters and equipment to the reporting location.
- Travel may involve staging at a regional base before heading to the fire zone.
- All travel will have a journey management plan, including rules for vehicle and scheduled stops for food/washroom use.

- Upon arrival at the Incident Command Post or designated staging area, crews check in with MNR officials.
- Complete documentation: crew roster, health and safety forms, and receive operational briefing.
- All Firefighters will be inspected to ensure they have all training, equipment and PPE and are fit for work.

- Crews deploy under supervision of the Incident Commander or Division Supervisor.
- Safety briefing and review of fire behavior, weather conditions, and operational expectations.
- Crews will set up their camp area.
- Begin suppression activities as directed, maintaining safety and communication protocols.
- Crews will be out on the fireline for up to 14 days.
Each year, Outland delivers Ontario’s SP-100 Forest Fire Fighting training and recertification. Every Outland firefighter must complete this course or equivalent maintenance program to stay current.

Successful completion of the SP100 Fire Fighter Training Course does not guarantee employment.
Of the approximately 400 annual entry-level positions (crew member) within MNR, the vast majority are filled by returning staff. However, a turn-over rate of roughly 30% is expected annually meaning approximately 120 new fire fighters are hired each spring. Please note: The turn-over percentage varies depending on location so each Fire Management Headquarters should be contacted directly as to actual job opportunities. During periods of escalated fire activity, the MNR may hire Supplementary Fire Fighters to assist in a variety of roles. However, these are short-term, temporary contracts that end when forest fire activity returns to normal. There is also privately run firefighting crews (Type 2) that the MNR hires during escalated fire periods. These Type 2 fire fighter providers should be contacted directly as to actual job opportunities. You are encouraged to visit our website at http://ontario.ca/fireranger for more information.
Should have some type of contact information for inquires regarding the course.

No. SP-100 certification is required to qualify, but it doesn’t guarantee a spot. Most seasonal roles are filled by returning staff, but each year there are openings for new firefighters, especially during high fire activity.
